Programme pillar

African Botanicals & Natural Product Innovation

Responsible research, sustainable sourcing and value addition for African botanical resources.

  • SDG 12Responsible Consumption & Production
  • SDG 15Life on Land
  • SDG 8Decent Work & Economic Growth

Problem context

Why this matters

Africa holds immense botanical diversity, yet much of the value of its natural ingredients is captured elsewhere, sourcing is often unsustainable, and traditional knowledge is insufficiently protected.

Approach

How we work

We pair traditional knowledge holders with scientific partners, document sustainable sourcing, and support ethical value addition. Traditional uses are clearly distinguished from scientifically validated claims.

Design

Interventions and intended outcomes

Interventions

  • Sustainable wild-harvest and cultivation protocols
  • Botanical documentation and quality testing
  • Benefit-sharing frameworks
  • Processing and product development

Intended outcomes

  • Sustainably managed botanical value chains
  • Fairer value retained by communities
  • Evidence base on African botanicals

Evidence & metrics

Indicator framework

  • Species with documented sourcing protocols
  • Share of value retained locally
  • Quality-tested ingredients
Targets and baselines are set per project and published only once verified.
